What’s Rachel Reading? Everything!

Normally I’d bring you a single book review in this weekly “What’s Rachel Reading” report, but this week? Well, this week I’m having some serious commitment issues! I just walked around and picked up these four library books sporting bookmarks in various stages of completion — and let’s not even talk about the magazines, lol.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this: Who else here tends to read multiple books at once?

So what books do we have bookmarked today?

Inquiring cats want to know… so, in today’s half-finished library pile we have:

Hidden Figures. You’ve probably already heard about this one — and I haven’t yet seen the movie, but picked up the book at the library recently. This fascinating story of black female mathematicians at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory starts during World War II and continues through to the Cold War. While the book is well-written and well-researched, for some reason I’m finding it kind of slow going. I see that the movie is coming soon to Redbox, so may watch it it from there and then come back to the book later.

American Gods. Continuing the theme of “things Rachel hasn’t seen but is now reading,” American Gods is now a STARZ original series. Hopefully it will show up on Netflix some year, but for since I don’t have STARZ I’ll content myself with the book for the moment. The book? So far, it’s amazing. Gaiman is a master storyteller, and American Gods doesn’t disappoint as it tells the story of gods both old and new — interwoven with the story of our protagonist, Shadow, an ex-con who’s more than he seems on the surface.

One Pan & Done. Easy & delicious looking one-pan recipes: What’s not to like about this book from the author of Sheet Pan Suppers? (More at her blog, Dunk & Crumble.) Beautiful photos (but not for all recipes, alas), and I’m planning to try out dishes like her portobello & black bean chili.

Battle Hill Bolero. The last book in an urban fantasy trilogy I’ve been reading; the Bone Street Rumba series will probably be up your alley if you enjoy authors like Jim Butcher and Simon R. Green.

So, what are you reading this week?

What have you been reading lately? Tell us about it! ? And, you can browse all the What’s Rachel Reading? book reviews here.

I'm always reading a book on my kindle, and listening to (a different) audio book at the same time (both downloaded from the library) I LOVED American Gods and actually signed up for the free STARZ trial last night to see if its as good as the book - and it is! Currently I'm in a historical fiction groove - I've read The Underground Railroad, The Dressmaker, The Invisible Bridge, The Last Runaway, The Life We Bury and The Anatomy Lesson in the past few weeks. All excellent! I also really enjoyed The Century Trilogy by Ken Follett. Three stories that span from 1911 - early 2000s, about different families - one Welsh, one German, One Russian and One American and how their lives interact and how wars and politics affected them. Great history lessons too:)

I have trouble with audio books -- I think because I read fast, so I get impatient listening and want to know what happens; I'm not good at just listening to a story. dh loves them, however!

I'm going to hope that American Gods shows up on Prime or Netflix at some point, because it's something I'd love to watch. Since we don't have any shortage of entertainment though, it can wait. (See, that I'm patient for... strange, but there it is! ;) )

I probably read 2 or 3 books per week, thanks to our great library system.

However, I only read two at the the same time if one is fiction and the other is non-fiction. Otherwise, I tend to mix things up.

Some areas no longer receive Tide coupons in the P&G inserts, but instead ads directing people to print them online instead.
