Since our regular meal planning is all higgledy-piggledy this week due to the holidays, I thought it would be fun to talk about what everyone is making this Christmas! It’s so unusual that Chanukah is overlapping Christmas this year, but we usually just have a quiet family day at home: Lox & bagels in the morning and turkey & potatoes in the afternoon, with board games + movies all day long.
And maybe some snack nuts in between… see this little CVS trip in the Hot Deals group, and come share yours! I also picked up one of the $.49/lb turkeys at Jewel last week, which is currently thawing in the fridge. MashupDad just got back from Costco with the lox & bagels, so he’s the true hero of the holiday just for venturing over there two days before Christmas. (He called from the 10 minute line waiting to turn in — cops directing traffic and everything — but said inside was OK; navigating the parking lot was the bad part…)
CVS was enough excitement for me, though. Who else is VERY glad that the stores will be getting back to normal next week?
Even more than the turkey itself, I look forward to making soup with the leftovers. Just trying to decide which sounds best this year — roasted garlic turkey noodle soup, or slow cooker turkey soup with sausage, or southwest turkey soup, or some kind of new scratched up turkey soup I haven’t made before.
So that’s our simple little menu plan for Christmas Day. What’s on yours?

We are going low key this year. Chicken pot pie....yum! I also made a Cranberry Ambrosia side dish and for dessert we are doing brownies with peppermint ice cream. :-)

Breakfast will be French toast sticks made by son #1. Lunch is TBD, maybe just assorted appetizers? Dinner is beef roast, green beans, Yorkshire pudding (which is actually bread http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/yorkshire-pudding-recipe.html) and twice baked potatoes (store was out of anything but Idaho potatoes).

Bone in ham, sweet potato's, mashed potato's and sauteed baby bok choy. Looking forward to pinto beans with ham and split pea and ham soup for the leftovers. For dessert: pistachio cake and broken glass jello.

I finished making my broken glass torte last night! Its a recipe passed down to me by my husband's late aunt. You are the first person that I have ever heard talk about it! We will have Italian beef and sausage, lasagna, cheesy potatoes and veggies today at my daughter's for 25 people. Tomorrow will be much quieter at my house with a few family members and a stuffed beef tenderloin (Martha Stewart recipe from 20 years ago) green beans with pearl onions and mashed potatoes. Happy Holidays to all and thanks to Rachel for all you do throughout the year to help us save!

Rachel, now at the holidays is a good time to thank you for all your work providing good deals this year. I lose track of how many good buys I got because of mashupmom that no one else seemed to be aware of!
Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday, and the best to you in 2017!
Like a lot of you, I'm already getting started on Christmas dinner preparations and with all side dishes (some still undecided), I expect to be busy the next 24 hours.

We are having a beef rib roast I bought from Jewel along with PF Chang green beans and twice baked potatoes tomorrow. I've never made a beef rib roast so I found a few recipes and marinated it with spices and horseradish! Hope it's good! Christmas Day we are heading out and having pasta, beef tenderloin, twice baked potatoes again and hoping my cheesecake comes out ok. Never made that either!
