So yesterday: I’m just sitting at the table eating lunch and minding my own business when I notice all three cats staring intently out the back door. I thought maybe the deer had reappeared in our yard, so I look outside to see…
Yeah, that’s not a deer. Apparently Monday night’s storms had damaged part of the fence around the chicken run, so three of the girls made a break for it and were thoroughly enjoying themselves pecking around the yard. (The other two were watching them enviously through the fence and couldn’t seem to figure out how they did it, lol…)
Then, of course, the Notorious BKL jumped up on the table and helped herself to part of my lunch while I was outside chasing chickens around. That’s about right…!
So I guess we should be thankful for the built-in early warning kitty alert system we have going here, right? It’s not that the backyard chickens will wander far, but we don’t let them out without someone out there to keep an eye on them — We have coyotes, foxes, skunks, hawks, raccoons, and neighborhood dogs wandering around that would love themselves a winner winner chicken dinner, and have lost chickens to predators before.
Life’s always entertaining around here, if nothing else. 😉

The look on Jeremy's face is priceless. He seems to know that they shouldn't be out there by themselves. Wasn't that nice of BKL to only eat part of your lunch?!!!!

Too funny! (Sorry you had to repair the run, though.)

No need for a "chicken alarm" system; Your kitties will let you know when the chickens are out.
