Can you believe that all these years I’ve lived in Illinois, I’d never been to Medieval Times before last week? Now: I know what we’ve been missing while driving on by that huge castle off the highway all of these years! Our whole family had a blast at our Medieval Times Schaumburg outing, even the slightly jaded junior high guy. So here’s my Medieval Times review, then read on for your chance to win your own family outing to Medieval Times Schaumburg.
Mr. 8 was especially inspired — he somehow talked us into this official Medieval Times wooden axe from their gift shop, and then jazzed it up and fashioned his own knight costume out of paper the very next day. (Not bad, eh?!)
Speaking of the gift shop, fair warning: They walk you through both going in and leaving, leaving you with plenty of time to browse before the doors to the dinner show open. 🙂
And what a show it was: We had knights, we had jousting, we had parades and falcons and games of skill… we had a tournament and drama and the chance to cheer on “our” knight as he made his way through the tournament… to victory! Every visitor gets a paper crown in their knight’s color and a pennant to cheer him on — and the knights tossed carnations as favors to random girls in the crowd.
All this while enjoying a hearty meal — made “medieval” via pewter dinnerware and the lack of utensils, lol. Here’s Mr. 8 enjoying his “baby dragon,” and we also supped on everything from “dragon’s blood” (tomato bisque) to “dragon’s eggs” (seasoned potatoes). Medieval Times will make food substitutions for allergies (Italian ice rather than apple turnover for a gluten free, dairy free dessert for example), and has a vegetarian option available as well.
Protective screens came down during the actual jousting portion of our evening’s entertainment, which was well-choreographed with plenty of dramatic moments and sparks flying from the knights’ blades. All in all, this was super fun family entertainment, suitable for all ages.
