Check this one out — The new K’NEX KFORCE Build and Blast K-20X set is a blaster toy and a building set in one! Aimed at ages 8+, this thing fires up to 75 feet and is compatible with the entire K-FORCE Build and Blast line at an MSRP of $27.99.
Mr. 8 worked on this set all one afternoon and into the next day, and did get a little frustrated. He’s at the lower end of the suggested age range, and some of the pieces were fairly hard to snap together. So he called in reinforcements in the form of Junior High Guy…
…And, success! This K’NEX K-FORCE blaster shoots fast and far, too. After this initial test, I kicked him outside to play with this one, and you’ll want to be sure not to aim this at anyone’s eyes or anything fragile. 🙂 Note that the firing mechanism is a little tight — you have to pull back to lock the foam dart in before shooting — so I’d stick with the recommended age range because it would probably frustrate smaller hands. (The fancy green parts on the back also kept popping out during use, but they’re purely decorative anyway.)
The other cool thing about this K-FORCE set is that you can take it apart and build alternatives (as well as your own creations, of course). After playing with his blaster for a couple of days, Mr. 8 asked me to download instructions for this smaller target set from the Internet using the link included in the original instructions. He then spent a good 90 minutes taking the original blaster apart and rebuilding it into this new creation, which I was glad to see — because the more use you can get out of one of these sets, the better!

My son just turned 21. He is away at college enrolled in and Engineering program at Purdue. This really cool toy would be right up his alley, for play before and after classes. Or just to terrorize the Fraternity Brothers or sister at home over the Holidays.
