Sugar Free Strawberries and Whipped Cream — No added sugars (or sugar substitutes!)

sugar free strawberries and whipped cream

A couple of you who have been following along with my quest to avoid refined sugar this year have asked what I eat when I am craving something sweet. Usually I just grab a piece of fruit (which, by the way, starts tasting soooo much sweeter after you stop eating sugar in desserts and processed foods), but occasionally I’ve been jazzing things up by adding some homemade sugar free whipped cream.

So today I thought I’d tell you about the sugar free strawberries and whipped cream we all enjoyed for dessert last night. I’d picked up a little container of heavy cream to make butter chicken in the Instant Pot, so this seemed like a great way to use some of the rest… and strawberries & whipped cream turned out to be nicely refreshing after a spicy dinner.

And, OK, this dessert is not technically “sugar free” since you have the naturally occurring sugars in the strawberries and cream here, so let’s just say: (Added) Sugar Free Strawberries & Whipped Cream if you’d like to be precise.

Give this easy four ingredient recipe a try the next time you’re looking for a dessert with no added sugars! Yes, it’s messy and a little bit imperfect, but such is life. 😉 Here I layered this sugar free strawberries and whipped cream dessert in a mason jar for you, but generally I just throw some strawberries (or blueberries or blackberries) in a bowl and dollop a little homemade whipped cream on top.

This recipe serves four, and you can see above that the whipped cream starts melting pretty quickly, so it’s best to eat yours right after you make it rather than trying to layer it all pretty and take photos.

Sugar Free Strawberries & Whipped Cream — No added sugars or sugar substitutes!

Ingredients

1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp cinnamon
16 oz fresh strawberries, sliced

Directions

Add cream, vanilla, and cinnamon to a small mason jar with a tightly fitting lid. Shake, shake, shake the jar vigorously for a few minutes until you have whipped cream, but stop before you have butter. (If you have kids in the house, get them in on this for a fun pre-dessert activity.)

Dollop freshly made whipped cream onto sliced strawberries and serve immediately.

A fresh & tasty dessert

Enjoy your fresh homemade strawberries and whipped cream, with no sugar added or needed! The whipped cream part is naturally gluten free and low carb (strawberries aren’t terrible as fruit goes, either; about 9 carbs in 4 oz) — although your heavy cream is definitely not low calorie. 🙂

You don’t need sugar substitutes

Most recipes for sugar free whipped cream rely on sugar substitutes, but you really don’t need them here — the cream and strawberries are plenty sweet as is. And if you want to follow along on my quest to avoid added sugars, check out the Refined Sugar and Me series here.
