Enjoy this different twist on homemade apple chips: Sweet & Spicy Apples & Honey Chips are the perfect fall treat!
Welcome to the October 2nd, 2016 edition of Sunday Scratchups: Your weekly recipe from scratch around grocery store sales and affordable ingredients. Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah, when we traditionally eat apples dipped in honey for a sweet new year — And, luckily for us, this coincides with abundant new crops of apples, and corresponding sales galore!
This week I picked up a three pound bag of Gala apples at ALDI for $1.59, so decided to scratch up this Sweet & Spicy Apples & Honey Chips recipe for a fun and tasty twist on the traditional apples and honey theme.
Just five ingredients in this easy baked apple chips recipe, so enjoy! L’shanah tovah!
Sweet & Spicy Apples & Honey Chips
Ingredients
2 medium Gala apples
1 Tbsp honey
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp chipotle chili powder
Juice from 1/4 of a small lemon
Directions
Slice your apples very thinly, discarding stems and seeds, and arrange in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
Combine all other ingredients in a small bowl. Brush honey & spice mixture onto each apple slice. Bake at 225 degrees for 2.5-3 hours, turning sheet around halfway through cooking time. Test for doneness around the 2.5 hour mark, and when apple slices are starting to crisp up and the edges are starting to curl up, turn off the heat and leave them in the warm oven another 10-30 minutes to finish drying out.
Remove from cookie sheet and enjoy!
Note: I used a knife to slice my apples. If you use a mandoline and have thinner slices, yours may cook more quickly, so start testing for doneness at the 2 hour mark.
If you could just bottle the smell of slowly baking apple chips…
Glade, eat your heart out: No artificial air freshener can hold a candle to the authentic smell of slowly baking apples in the oven! Sweet & Spicy Apples & Honey chips is a fantastic recipe for a chilly fall day when you’ll appreciate a warm & cozy kitchen all afternoon, and a delicious dessert for your Rosh Hashanah celebration (or any time).
The chipotle powder does provide a nice kick, so if you don’t like spicy food you can leave that out and just enjoy cinnamon-sweet apple chips. If you don’t mind a little heat, though, it makes a beautiful contrast to the sweetness of the honey and apples — and just takes the whole flavor up another notch. Sweet & Spicy Apples & Honey chips are naturally gluten free and dairy free.
