This week’s Frugal Homemade feature is for DIY Magnetic Spice Tins. I made these a couple months ago & am very pleased with them! We recently downsized & I have fewer cabinets than I have ever had. Using one entire shelf for spices was not space-efficient for me, so I decided to put the side of our fridge to work. As you can see, they are right by the dry erase menu board we did a few weeks ago.
I found round chalkboard stickers in the Dollar Spot at Target and ordered tin containers from Specialty Bottle. After looking through all of my spices, I decided 2.5 oz containers would work well. I ordered 40 tins & have about 8 left over, in case I add to my spice collection in the future.
You will also need strong magnets, similar to these. I bought a roll of adhesive magnets at JoAnn for around $3.00 after a 50% off coupon.
Let’s get started!
Materials:
Spice tins
Labels (if you use chalkboard labels, I write on mine with a white paint pen so it looks like chalk, but doesn’t smudge off.)
Magnets
Gorilla Glue
First, clean your spice tins. Next, write out your labels & affix them to the tops of your spice containers.
Cut your magnets to fit your tins & glue them in place with Gorilla Glue. It’s important to use strong enough & big enough magnets, otherwise the spice containers won’t stick to your fridge.
Once the glue is dry, you can fill your containers. Put them on your fridge and reclaim some shelf or drawer space. Happy cooking!

Hi Amy! So far so good! I have mine on the side of my fridge & they stay put. I love them & it works well for us. I haven't had any issues with them falling off the fridge or the spices falling out.

Hi Rachel,
How are these working out for you? I'm about to take the plunge and order the tins, but thought to ask you first now that it's been a few months. Are they holding up well? Do the lids stay on?
Thanks! Amy

This is not my project (unfortunately, since my spices are a mess) -- Allison writes these Frugal Homemade posts for us, so maybe she can answer that? :)
